This is somethign that I've needed forever and I just realised that you're probably the developer most likely to have the know how to do it.

The scenario is simple:

Users subscribe to roles. Some roles are directly tied to site or module security, for example, newsletter subscriptions and access to site content.

However, people like me also use the roles for products and services that are outside of the website. For example, a posted newsletter, training courses, external events, payments, customer satisfaction status, all sort of things. The problem with these roles is that whilst the user can easily enable or disable them, the site owner has no idea when it happens or what has happened.

I imagine the ideal add-on or module might work something like this:

• As site owner I can assign a notification address for subscription and removal notifications.
• There could be an address for all roles, or an address per role group, or even on a role by role basis... anything is better than nothing.
• Notifications could be sent out either individually as they happen, or possibly in bulk in a single email on a schedule.
• The notification would say who gained access to, or removed themselves from  what role/s.
• Highly valuable additional functionality would be:
  • Notification of any change to a person's user profile, not just roles. The main reason for this is for maintaining external address and phone books. Currently there is no way to trace such changes.

Yes that sounds like a good plan to me. Use the email in my profile.

I've checked out pretty much every role selection/subscription/opt-in type of module that is currently available and have a pretty good overview.

Also let me know if you have a limited and specific functionality in mind for it or if you're wide open to ideas such as the one I've mentioned above.

Sorry I missed this reply earlier, but I've got it now. I don't seem to get notifications from some forums including this one, so I just check in once in a while.

I'll definitely download the opt in module and give it a good workout. I'll get back to you with feedback on that soon. One thing that matters is whether you're familiar with doing Paypal bits in modules.

I've spent a lot of time lately looking into these things and there is simply nothing that can manage it all in one. Ventrian's Subscriptionsmodule an excellent notification and purchase records feature, but is otherwise too restricted.
